Smart Bug.
 by Lance Reynard

Back in the late 80's I was spending a lot of 'nature' time and took a lot of walks in the woods near streams the whole nature thing.

One day near St Johns College in St. Joesph Minnesota I was standing near a fence watching a small herd of horses graze and noticed, siting in the fence post next to me , a very small bug. (A little over 1/4 inch) A unique looking creature.
Appeared to be a very small preying mantis.

Now I was leaned forward against the fence and the bug was on the fence post next to me, because I was leaned over and a bit stooped down my face was about a foot from this very tiny alien looking bug. With it's 'folded' front arms.
As I looked at it it seemed to be staring in the same direction that I was.

Now this bugs eyes are on the side of it's head so the logical conclusion is that it was keeping an eye on me.
But still it seemed to be 'watching ' the horses graze. As I watched -it leaned forward and turned it's head in my direction- seemed to look at me.

With humor I said "Horses" and the bug looked back to the direction of the horses.
I thought this was an odd 'coincidence'.

The bug was also still leaning forward, as if to 'pounce' or jump.
Then it looked back to me again and I said.
You're a smart bug. Can you do tricks? Can you "Sit up?"

Well the bug sat straight up at that exact moment. While continuing to 'look' at me.
The sun was setting at our faces and it turned its tiny head back to the horses as I stared in wonder at it.

I just looked back to the horses for a while and left with a new experience, that a 'bug' had given me.
